7 tips to make your Christmas more sustainable

All right. While you decorate your home inside and out with the most spectacular Christmas lights, your family will drive your way from across the country, because Christmas = being together. The heating is a bit higher, because grandma is coming too and, according to tradition, the menu includes a Christmas turkey or venison steak. Recognizable?

The holidays are accompanied by many traditions and every year we all hope for a white Christmas. But what if we all made Christmas a little bit greener? We give you 7 tips to make your Christmas more sustainable. Ready? Let's go!

1. Shine a little LED!

If you choose LED lights instead of light bulbs, you're not only saving money, it's also better for the environment. With LED lighting, you use much less power, which is why this light source contributes to reducing CO2 emissions. If we were all to replace the lights in our BeterBoompjes with LED lights, CO2 emissions would be drastically reduced!

2. Sustainable dinner

Turkey, steak or delicious gourmet food... Isn't that a pleasure?! With the holidays, we all unpack and want more than our daily GDPR. Makes sense! But there are lots of delicious ways to make your dinner a little more sustainable. Opt for game, less meat or go (jingle) all the way for a vegetarian dinner. All the little ones help! Oh yes! Christmas Day is clique day. So don't throw anything away for the holidays, just divide up the leftovers and enjoy!

3. Go for a Better Tree

All right. This one falls into the “We from WC Duck” category, but it would also be crazy if we didn't mention it, right? A real Christmas tree that you put on the corner of the street after use is really 2019. BeterBoompje has been around since 2020 and we want to help the whole of the Netherlands get this sustainable variant! See which pickup location is closest to you here and easily order your green friend now.

4. Family carpooling

What if most of your family comes from the Amsterdam area, but you're still celebrating Christmas Day with grandma in Maastricht? Do you all go south in different cars? Or can that also be done differently? Yep. This question is rhetorical, because it can certainly be done differently. See if you can enjoy carpooling, or go by train.

5. Sustainable Christmas gift

Make up, socks or 30 seconds. There is a good chance that one or more of these gifts has sometimes been under your Christmas tree. This can be done more sustainably and more original. This year, consider whether you might be able to give an experience as a gift, or go for a fair trade gift. For example, opt for a reusable coffee mug, fair trade chocolate or natural care products. And while you're at it, be creative with packing too. Opt for recycled paper or a glass jar and let your creativity run wild!

6. Grab balls

Can't you wait for the Christmas department at the Intratuin to open, so you can gaze at all the splendour like a real magpie? Or do you get the same Christmas decorations from the attic every year? A nice, sustainable way to buy new Christmas decorations is... exchange. Most people want something new every now and then, so ask your friends and family if they want to trade their baubles for yours.

7. Environmentally aware and fashion-conscious

Instead of reinventing yourself with fast fashion, it's a lot more sustainable to opt for a vintage outfit. Or even better: rent your clothes! Would you love to wear that fantastic Christmas outfit from last year again, but are you afraid that everyone will notice it? With a different jacket and glitter tights, you can create a whole new look, at least... if that outfit is a dress. But we don't judge.

We hope these tips help you. Together, we can make the world a better place. Which tip is your favorite?
